When prepping for your bike foray into the outdoors, safety is paramount when planning your trip. Bike helmets are essential for children and ensuring that their helmet is a good fit will help to make sure they stay safe. Helmets should fit snuggly, without moving from side to side, and should rest levelly, about one to two finger-widths above the eyebrow. Performing a “yawn test”—having your child do a big yawn and checking to see if the helmet pulls down on their head will help to confirm the helmet is a good fit. Modeling good helmet safety is important — so wearing your own well-fitting helmet is an excellent practice. Knowing your family’s biking abilities and experience will help to determine the terrain and paths you plan for your family’s biking abilities. For new riders, flat surfaces that are paved and away from traffic or other hazards are a great place to start. Depending on ability, weather, and endurance, the length of the route is also to be taken into consideration.
